A Rural Journey Through The Countryside And Lake Kasumigaura, Savoring The Passage Of Time.
Experience a heartwarming rural life in a DIY-renovated house nestled quietly in a peaceful area, Inashiki City, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan, within the Kasumigaura basin.
This place is not a typical tourist spot, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the authentic lifestyle of the Japanese countryside, and has the nostalgic charm of the Showa period, like something out of the world of Totoro.
Not a tourist spot — but a destination worth the journey
Located in the serene Shika village area of Inashiki City, Ibaraki Prefecture, this tranquil setting feels as though time has come to a standstill.
INASHIKI NEST is a traditional Japanese countryside home that feels like stepping into a scene from My Neighbor Totoro — a nostalgic Showa-era house surrounded by endless rice fields and peaceful nature.
Far from the typical tourist trails, this is a place where you can experience the true, untouched beauty of rural Japan.
Wake up to birdsong, the chirping of insects, and the gentle croak of frogs. Fall asleep on a futon, just like in old Japanese homes, and spend your day slowly, feeling the breeze from the engawa (veranda) or exploring the quiet town by bicycle.
There’s a vegetable garden right in front of the house, and depending on the season, you might catch it in full bloom.
Your host, Fujiko, and her husband Fumiro, stay in a different house on the same property, nearby.
If you need anything, while still allowing you to enjoy the calm and privacy of your own space.
*There are no convenience stores or restaurants nearby, but there are local shops within walking distance, and it’s the perfect place to cook, unwind, and disconnect.
*No train access — but only 40 minutes by car from Narita Airport, and you’ll find yourself in a quiet, hidden corner of Japan.
*You might hear planes from time to time, but even that becomes part of the gentle rhythm of nature here.
INASHIKI NEST has been used as a filming location for two movies.

It doesn’t have a nearby train station, so reaching it by public transportation can be a bit challenging, however, it is easily accessible by car or bicycle.
As a result, the vicinity remains uncrowded, providing a tranquil environment for visitors to relax.
This is especially evident just after the rice planting season.
This is a typical traditional Japanese house where locals used to live, so it doesn’t have the overly crafted feel of a tourist spot. Instead, it offers an authentic experience of rural life in Japan.
Though it’s a bit inconvenient without a car (bicycles are also an option), it’s perfect for those who wish to enjoy the natural, heartwarming experience of living in an uncommercialized Japanese countryside.
